Caring for your Texas Royal Yorkie

Essential guidance delivered at selection and contract stages. Keep this handy for the first weeks home.

Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)

Toy breeds can drop blood sugar quickly, especially when stressed, cold, or underfed.

  • Watch for: lethargy, wobbliness, glassy eyes, weakness, seizures.
  • Act fast: rub a little honey or Karo syrup on the gums; keep the puppy warm; call your vet.
  • Prevent: free-choice dry kibble available; small frequent meals; never skip meals; limit long gaps overnight for very young pups.

Feeding schedule (first weeks)

  • 8–12 weeks: 3–4 small meals daily of high-quality small-breed puppy food (same brand we send home when possible).
  • Always provide fresh water.
  • Transition foods gradually over 5–7 days if changing brands.
  • Avoid table scraps, cooked bones, grapes, chocolate, xylitol, onions.

First days home

  • Quiet first night; crate or playpen with soft bedding.
  • Potty often (after sleep, play, meals).
  • Limit stairs and rough play with children/other pets initially.
  • Book your vet visit within 3 business days for the required health sign-off.

Grooming & health basics

  • Brush regularly; schedule professional grooming as coat grows.
  • Keep eyes clean; Yorkies can tear-stain.
  • Continue vaccine series per your vet; we provide first vaccines at pickup.
  • Never leave outdoors unsupervised; Yorkies are indoor companion dogs.
